Automated Zone Indicator (AZI) Table

The AZI table lists each five-digit ZIP Code™ and is an indicator of the type of processing that typically takes place on letter mail destined for each ZIP Code. Each number in the file is a ZIP Code appended with a numeric zone indicator. The five numeric indicators are as follows:

  1. Two Pass Zones: Automated two-step sector/segment at mail processing facilities
  2. 876 Carrier Route Sort Zones: Automated incoming secondary carrier route sorting at plants
  3. Carrier Route Barcode Sorter (CSBCS) Zones: Automated walk sequence sorting on CSBCS machines at delivery units
  4. Delivery Barcode Sorter (DBCS) Zones: Automated walk sequence sorting on DBCS machines at plants [i.e., sectional center facilities (SCFs)] or at delivery units
  5. Manual/Mechanized Zones: No automated sorting; no tracking code scans should be generated from facilities matched to these ZIP Codes

Election Mail and Ballot Mail STID Finder

The Election Mail and Ballot Mail Service Type IDentifier (STID) Finder is a tool designed to assist election officials and their mail service providers in selecting an appropriate Election Mail and Ballot Mail STID for their outbound mailings.*

A STID is a unique three-digit code that indicates the service type for an individual mailpiece. Use of the appropriate STIDs allows for Informed Visibility® Mail Tracking and Reporting (IV®-MTR) to identify mailpieces, with all expected service combinations, during mail processing.

How it Works

The tool asks users to answer a series of yes/no and multiple-choice questions related to the main attributes that determine which STID may match the mailer’s needs for Intelligent Mail barcoded mail.

It is critical when utilizing the tool to understand the difference between Ballot Mail and Election Mail in order to select the optimal STID.

Ballot Mail is a mailpiece sent to or from an authorized election official containing a live ballot that may be used to cast a vote in an election. Ballot Mail is a subset of Election Mail, which is any item mailed to or from an authorized election official that enables citizens to participate in the voting process, such as live and sample ballots, voter registration cards, absentee ballot applications, and polling place notifications.

This tool supports ONLY Election Mail and Ballot Mail. All other types of mailings should refer to the full list of STIDs available on Postal Pro at https://postalpro.usps.com/mailing/service-type-identifiers.

*Please note that the tool’s results are suggestions only. For further insight into what each STID offers, contact the ACS Help Desk via email at ACS@usps.gov or by phone at 877-640-0724, Option 1.
