Product Tracking and Reporting (PTR)

Product Tracking & Reporting (PTR), a cornerstone of the USPS technology ecosystem, stores tracking data for all barcoded packages and extra services, delivering real-time updates to customers via USPS.com, Informed Delivery, and external APIs. PTR captures tracking events continuously from label creation to final delivery, aggregating data from a variety of sources including mailer data, handheld scanners, retail terminals, and mail processing equipment.

PTR is being modernized to deliver a best-in-class visibility solution for customers. The new platform, PTR2, has been designed to provide improved availability and performance with decreased latency and downtime.

Customers can receive data from PTR and PTR2 through the following channels:

• Tracking API (PTR v3.0, PTR2 v3.2)
• Webhooks (PTR v3.0, PTR2 v3.2)
• Scan Event Extracts
• Notifications (email and text message)

Overview & Benefits

Product Tracking and Reporting (PTR) is the database that stores tracking scan data for all barcoded packages and extra services products. The scan events take place from acceptance all the way to delivery. The tracking information comes from business mailers' files, handheld scanners, retail equipment, mail processing equipment, and many other Postal systems. Signature images are also available for applicable products. Extract files are sent to business customers to supply them with tracking events. The USPS Tracking website is also available to individual customers to check the delivery status of their items and request proof of delivery or e-mail notification, when applicable.

Bulk Proof of Delivery Program

The bulk proof of delivery program gives mailers the ability to receive signature proof of delivery records for applicable mailpieces without requesting them individually. This enhancement allows mailers to retain records longer than the Postal Service retention period and provides mailers a more efficient way to handle signature records.
